The eye has a natural lens inside it called "crystalline." This lens is completely transparent so that light can pass through it and the image can be focused onto the retina located at the back of the eye. When the lens loses its transparency, for whatever reason (age, diabetes, injuries, etc.), is called a cataract, and the main symptom is progressive vision loss. Cataract surgery consists in removing that opaque lens from the eye and replace it with an intraocular lens that allows re-entry of light to the eye and the images are again focused on the retina. The procedure to remove cataracts is called Phacoemulsification, and it is to perform a microincision in the cornea (the transparent front of the eye) under topical anesthesia (drops) and aspirate the opaque lens that dissolves through ultrasound. Once the cataract is removed, an intraocular lens is inserted that will allow the focus of the image on the retina. This procedure requires no sutures, and is fully ambulatory, so the patient is discharged immediately after the microsurgery. Postoperative care is minimal, requiring the application of medical eye drops and relative rest during the next 24 hours. The visual recovery is of 100% if there are no coexisting eye diseases and it is possible it may require some lens graduation to obtain the best vision possible.
