Inside the eye exists a clear fluid called aqueous humor. This fluid is produced continuously from the blood, circulates inside the eye and returns to the blood after several minutes. The amount of aqueous humor within the eye maintains an intraocular pressure which must not exceed certain limits. If the pressure rises above normal levels, the optic nerve suffers progressive and permanent damage that results in progressive and irreversible vision loss. This disease is called glaucoma. There are different types of glaucoma and therefore different treatments for this disease are considered. One such treatment is surgical, a totally ambulatory procedure, and consists of using some technique to facilitate the exit of the aqueous humor. Postoperative care is minimal, requiring the application of medical eye drops and relative rest during the next 24 hours.
