LASER SURGERY FOR MYOPIA (LASIK)
Most of the vision problems caused by myopia can be completely corrected with laser surgery (LASIK or INTRALASE). This laser procedure requires, at least one day before, a strict preoperative evaluation (Topography/Corneal Pachymetry Exam) to determine if the patient is a candidate for surgery on his/her eyes. In case the patient uses soft contact lenses a 3 day break from them is required and a 3 week break for rigid or gas permeable contact lenses prior to the examination. The patient will require the application of eye drops two days before surgery. After this test is done, during the preoperative evaluation, the ocular conditions (age, type and magnitude of prescription, concomitant eye diseases, etc.) that could have an impact on the outcome, will be evaluated and discussed with the patient. The ambulatory surgical procedure involves the use of state of the art laser technology that, under topical anesthesia (drops), allows the maximum possible correction of myopia. Postoperative care is minimal, the patient must avoid rubbing his/her eyes for one week and requires the application of eye drops for 4 to 6 weeks.
