During the preoperative evaluation, the ocular conditions (age, type and magnitude of prescription, concomitant eye diseases, etc.) that could have an impact on the outcome, will be evaluated and discussed with the patient. Surgery to correct retinal detachment, also called retinopexy, is a procedure that involves the use of one or several techniques to place back the retina. Among these techniques are the application of a silicone band around the eye, the vitrectomy (intraocular transparent gel replacement by a special fluid), the laser photocoagulation, the application of criocoagulation (freezing), the intraocular silicone liquid injection and the expandable intraocular gas injection. In case this last technique is applied, the patient will not be able to travel for the next 3 months. Postoperative care includes strict bed rest from 4 to 21 days, application of topical medication (drops) and oral analgesics.
