Vitrectomy is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of the vitreous humor and its replacement by a special fluid that meets its optical characteristics. This procedure is performed for the treatment of some eye diseases such as vitreous haemorrhage, intraocular infection or advanced diabetic retinopathy that threaten vision. It is performed under general anesthesia and it usually is accompanied by application of endofotocoagulation (transoperative laser on the retina). The procedure may be ambulatory or may require one day of hospitalization and postoperative care is minimal, consisting of relative rest and the application of topical medication (drops).
